Unplugged Weekends: What I Learned From Going Off-Grid

The world we live in today is one that is completely connected through phones, laptops, and social media. From the moment we open our eyes in the morning to the moment we go to bed at night, a screen has become a part of our lives. But the question that kept coming to my mind was whether this constant connection was actually good for us. In order to find an answer to that question, I decided to spend a few weekends completely disconnected from technology, without any phone, social media, or screens. Although it seemed like a scary experiment at first, it taught me many unexpected and profound lessons. In this article, I hope to share my experience of the challenges I faced, the mental healing I achieved, and the lasting changes in my daily life.

The First Weekend Away From Technology: The Challenges I Faced

dd5f19b7-739e-44bc-b65b-8a8feea7f34d.jpegI still remember the day I decided to spend a weekend completely away from technology for the first time in my life. The moment I woke up in the morning, I wanted to pick up my phone as I usually do, but it had been placed somewhere out of reach, so I could not. In that first moment, I felt a strange sense of fatigue, or a sense of something being missing. All day long, my hands would automatically go to my pockets to look for my phone, but it was not there, and I felt empty.

The biggest challenge I faced on the first day was the worry of, “What if something urgent happens to my friends or family?” Since we are all connected to our phones in the modern world, being separated from my phone felt like being separated from the world. But after a few hours, that worry gradually subsided, and instead, I realized that I was living in the present moment.

Another big challenge was dealing with boredom and the feeling of “doing nothing.” I, who usually fill every free moment with social media, was forced to confront that emptiness. Even when I tried to read a book, my mind kept wandering to my phone for the first few minutes. This showed me how deep my addiction to technology had become.

Even during mealtimes, when I was sitting at the table with my family, I felt the urge to look at my phone whenever the conversation came to a standstill. Its absence forced us to look at each other and have real conversations, an uncomfortable experience at first, but a rewarding one. Breaking the habit of mechanically checking our phones before going to bed at night was another challenge.

This early weekend taught me that breaking away from technology is not a simple task, but a process that requires mental and emotional preparation. However, through those challenges, I learned many unexpected but invaluable lessons.

The Mental Health Benefits of Digital Silence

Our minds are constantly responding to hundreds of notifications, messages, and social media updates every day, so they never really get a chance to rest. Without that constant stimulation, my mind gradually began to calm down.
For the first time, I was able to think without interruption. Normally, we are interrupted by a notification on our phones while we are thinking about something, so it is rare to engage in deep thinking. But having moments without screens allowed me to think about the same thing continuously for several minutes. This gave me the opportunity to rethink various decisions in my life.

Another important benefit of being away from social media was getting rid of the “comparison trap.” It was only after I broke away from social media that I realized how constantly we compare our own lives to the lives, achievements, and “perfect” moments of others. When I was free from that comparison, I was able to think about my own life with greater gratitude.

My sleep quality also improved significantly. By not being exposed to the blue light from my phone before going to bed at night, my brain naturally began to prepare for sleep. In the morning, waking up naturally instead of waking up to the sound of a notification was a very refreshing experience.

In this silence, I also had the opportunity to truly connect with my own feelings. Normally, we would immediately reach for our phones to distract ourselves when we feel uncomfortable, but when there was no screen, I had to face those feelings. Although it was difficult at first, it helped me develop greater emotional strength.
Overall, this digital silence taught me that true mental well being lies not in external stimulation, but in inner silence.

A Screen Free Life: How I Changed My Everyday Habits

This habit, which was initially limited to the weekends, gradually began to become part of my regular routine. For example, instead of checking my phone as soon as I wake up in the morning, I now make a habit of spending fifteen to twenty minutes without a screen.

My reading habit has improved significantly. Whereas before, I would read one or two books in a month, now I can finish a book in a weekend. This has helped me rediscover my love of reading. In addition, I now have time for many things I did not do before, such as drawing, gardening, or trying out new recipes.

Social relationships have also developed differently. Instead of texting over the phone, I now prefer to meet up with friends and family in person or make phone calls. This change has made my relationships deeper and more meaningful. I realized how valuable it is to hear someone’s voice or see their face instead of communicating only through a text message.

My exercise routine has also improved. Previously, I would spend my time at the gym with my phone, but now I prefer to go for walks or swims in nature without a screen, listening to natural sounds. This has contributed greatly not only to my physical health but also to my mental well being.

The way I work has also changed. Applying the lessons I learned from the quiet of the weekend to my weekdays, I have now made a habit of checking my phone only at specific times during work. This has significantly improved my focus and productivity.

Ultimately, this entire experience has taught me that while technology does not have to be completely abandoned, it does have to be controlled. I now use technology as a tool to help enrich my life, rather than allowing it to control me. This simple yet powerful change has had a profound impact on my overall life satisfaction.

Conclusion

The most valuable lesson I learned from this tech vacation was that true connection lies not in the phone screen, but with the world and people around us. This journey, which was initially challenging, gradually paved the way for better mental well being, deeper thinking, and more meaningful relationships. This change, which spread from weekend silence to my daily routine, has completely changed my life.

I realized that technology is not the enemy, but a powerful tool that must be properly controlled. If you, too, are tired of constant notifications, messages, and screens, I recommend trying an off grid weekend, even in small steps. You may be surprised at how much rest it can give you.
Ultimately, we need to go beyond the screen to experience the real moments of life.

Put your phone away and look around you. The real world is silently passing you by while you are too busy with other people's business.😌
